Bourbon Cowboy

The adventures of an urbane bar-hopping transplant to New York.

Location: New York, New York, United States

I'm a storyteller in the New York area who is a regular on NPR's "This American Life" and at shows around the city. Moved to New York in 2006 and am working on selling a memoir of my years as a greeting card writer, and (as a personal, noncommercial obsession) a nonfiction book called "How to Love God Without Being a Jerk." My agent is Adam Chromy at Artists and Artisans. If you came here after hearing about my book on "This American Life" and Googling my name, the "How to Love God" book itself isn't in print yet, and may not even see print in its current form (I'm focusing on humorous memoir), but here's a sample I've posted in case you're curious anyway: Sample How To Love God Introduction, Pt. 1 of 3. Or just look through the archives for September 18, 2007.) The book you should be expecting is the greeting card book, about which more information is pending. Keep checking back!

Speaking of Time Travel...

Saw this ad on a bus yesterday at 34th and Madison Avenue. "With attitude!" Breathe it in! It smells like 1992. (Next up: "Extreme Paisley")

Upcoming Dave Appearances

I was out of town over the weekend (Hi, Boston! Thanks for a great time!), I got home late, woke up late, and have scant moments before my workday begins. So while I have a lot to say (especially about the carnivalesque joys of my first Purim!), for now I just have to do a little upkeep. To wit:

I will be performing TONIGHT at Andy Christie's Liar Show, 8:00 at the People's Improv Theater at 154 W. 29th Street (between 6th and 7th Ave.), and I'll be sharing the stage with at least two other terrific storytellers I know: Peter Lubell and the hyperkinetic Adam Wade. For $5 it's a real steal. And, of course, one of us is lying, and you could get a t-shirt for guessing right!

Since that's terribly short notice, however, I should also mention that the Moth Grand Slam---where winners from all the previous slams of the past six months vie for a grand prize that includes actual money(!)---features me this time around, and I really want to win! The details:

MOTH Grand Slam
Tuesday, March 27th, at 7:30 (doors open at 7).
Comix, 353 W. 14th St. (between 8th and 9th Avenue)
I don't know how much it costs because I'm getting in free (!), but you can find details at The Moth.com

I Re-Exist!

I now have Internet access at home again! I can blog from wherever! I can do research and stuff! I'm tempted to e-mail everybody just because I can.

For the moment, however, I just want to make one observation: Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger is such a good songwriter that even one of his parody songs---"Pop Goes My Heart," from the movie Music and Lyrics---has been going through my head all day. If you haven't heard the song, or seen its very funny 80's music video parody, check it out here. Visually it's Wham!, musically it's ABC, and the "storyline" is more than a little a-ha. Clever all around.
