Location: New York, New York, United States

I'm a storyteller in the New York area who is a regular on NPR's "This American Life" and at shows around the city. Moved to New York in 2006 and am working on selling a memoir of my years as a greeting card writer, and (as a personal, noncommercial obsession) a nonfiction book called "How to Love God Without Being a Jerk." My agent is Adam Chromy at Artists and Artisans. If you came here after hearing about my book on "This American Life" and Googling my name, the "How to Love God" book itself isn't in print yet, and may not even see print in its current form (I'm focusing on humorous memoir), but here's a sample I've posted in case you're curious anyway: Sample How To Love God Introduction, Pt. 1 of 3. Or just look through the archives for September 18, 2007.) The book you should be expecting is the greeting card book, about which more information is pending. Keep checking back!

Another Day, Another Damn Crisis

In the interest of being actually hired by a temp agency, I just altered my resume to suggest that I know, and I quote, "a little Excel." (It appears to be the ne plus ultra, and my lack of such knowledge is why I haven't been getting any calls.) I don't think I've ever so much as seen the damn program. Does anyone out there have a copy of Microsoft Office or the like, and who can therefore send me a free copy? I clearly don't have enough money to buy it myself at the moment.

you know there are temp agencies that specialize in placing freelance writers, right? My friend had one and was always getting hired for computer companies to take their technical manuals and write user friendly manuals, etc. ANyway, it's good pay, you should check it out. P.S. Excel is a breeze, you can fake it.

If you know their names, I'd like to hear them. I've just been going through list after list of about a hundred temp agencies and reading user reviews on them when I can. A writer-specific agency would ease my mind considerably.

Thanks for the tip on Excel. I figured it was easy---particularly since I don't imagine most companies use it for anything particularly demanding. It's nice to hear this confirmed.

Thanks, Eric! I signed up with them, and now I'm going to Google and see which temp agency lists include them. They'll probably have others. Yay!
